Coins can be submitted to PCGS in three basic submission types:

Grading---This submission type is for uncertified coins.

Crossover--This submission type is for coins currently certified by some other grading service.  They are are submitted to PCGS in the other company's holder.  PCGS will examine the coin in the other company's holder and determine a grade.  If the PCGS grade is equal to or higher than the grade assigned by the other company, then PCGS will reholder the coin in a PCGS holder with the PCGS grade.  Otherwise, the coin will be returned in the other company's holder.  If submitters are willing to accept a lower grade from PCGS, a lower minimum crossover grade can be specified.

Regrade---Coins currently in PCGS holders can be submitted for review for a higher grade.  Before sending the coins to the grading room, PCGS will remove them from their PCGS holders.  If the graders regrade the coin at a higher grade, the coin will be returned in a new PCGS holder with the higher grade.  If the graders grade the coin the same or lower, PCGS will return the coin in a new PCGS holder with the same grade as submitted.  Note: PCGS coins submitted for regrade service can not go down in grade.

Basic Service Levels

Most US coins can be submitted to PCGS in one of four basic service levels: Walkthrough, Express, Regular and Economy.  The primary difference between the service levels is how quickly the coins are graded and returned; however, for some service levels there are minimum submission requirements and/or maximum values per coin.   In addition to grading, PCGS also offers VAM attribution or high resolution digital photos of the coins for an added fee.  The following chart shows the four basic service levels applicable for most US coins:

Review Services

PCGS offers a variety of review services for coins currently in a PCGS holder. Under VAM Variety Review, PCGS will reholder Morgan and Peace Dollars and add the VAM number.  Under Designation Review, PCGS will review the coin for appropriate designation (e.g., CAM, DCAM, FS, FH, FBL, etc.).  When either of these two review services is used, the grade will not be reviewed.  The coin will be returned in a new holder with the original grade and any eligible VAM variety or   designation.

The Presidential Review is a re-analysis of the coin by PCGS graders and the PCGS President.  It must be used within 30 days of the original submission.  If PCGS does not change the grade following the review, they will provide the reason(s) why the original grade was appropriate.

Finally, the Guarantee Review service is for coins the owner believes to be overgraded or not authentic.  If PCGS finds the original grade appropriate, they will return the coin in a new holder.  If they find the coin to be not genuine or overly graded, they will compensate the submitter per the PCGS guarantee:
